Apple’s Next iPhone Could Feature a Depth-sensing Camera on the Back

Posted March 12, 2020 | Apple | iOS | iPhone | Mobile | TrueDepth | Windows

Apple introduced major upgrades to the iPhone camera with the iPhone 11 line. And this year, the company could further advance the camera system on the iPhone with a new depth-sensing camera on the back of the device.

Apple’s flagship iPhone devices already offer a depth-sensing TrueDepth camera system on the front, which powers the Face ID authentication system and Animoji on the latest iPhones. Apple’s next iPhone could feature a similar system but on the back of the device.

Fast Company reports that Cupertino has been working on the “world-facing” depth-sensing camera for the iPhone for at least two years, but it could finally make the cut for at least one of this year’s iPhones. There is a possibility of the new camera not being in the final product, but the depth-sensing camera is apparently in the current design of the next iPhone.

The new depth-sensing camera will be supplied by Lumentum, the same company that makes the iPhone’s current TrueDepth camera for the front of the device.

With a depth-sensing camera on the back, Apple will finally be able to offer a much better portrait mode that is capable of competing with the likes of Samsung and Pixel devices. The new camera could also enable new AR experiences, something Apple has been making a big fuss about on iPhones in the last few years.
