Apple M2 15-inch MacBook Mac Studio Mac Pro

Apple has announced three new M2-based Mac models at its WWDC conference today. First of all, the redesigned M2 MacBook Air that the company launched last year is now available with a bigger 15.3-inch screen. The company also announced a new Mac Studio with M2 Max and a more powerful M2 Ultra chip. Lastly, the Mac Pro is finally making the transition to Apple Silicon today.

New 15-inch MacBook Air

This new 15-inch MacBook Air uses the same fanless design and M2 chip with 8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores, but it offers 18 hours of battery life and better audio with a six-speaker sound system. Apple claims it’s the thinnest 15-inch laptop being only 11.5mm thin, and it weighs just 3.3 pounds.

This new 15-inch MacBook Air comes with a Liquid Retina display with up to 500 nits of brightness, though there is no support for the Promotion technology that enables adaptive refresh rates on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

Except for the bigger screen and battery, there are not many differences with the 13-inch MacBook Pro: The ports selection is the same (2 Thunderbolt ports, 1 Magsafe port, and one headphone jack), and the 15-inch MacBook Pro also supports up to 24GB of unified memory and up to 2TB of storage.

This new 15-inch MacBook Pro is available for pre-order today ahead of its release next week, and it starts at $1299 ($1199 for education). The 13-inch model is now slightly cheaper and starts at $1099, while the M1 MacBook Air remains on sale and starts at $999

M2 Max and M2 Ultra Mac Studio

When Apple announced the first Mac Studio in March 2022, it was the most powerful desktop Mac with thanks to its M1 Max and M1 Ultra chip. Apple continues to iterate on this new form factor which looks like a taller version of the Mac Mini.

The 2023 version of the Mac Studio now offers the same M2 Max chip that Apple previously introduced on its new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models earlier this year. The M2 Max comes with a 12-core CPU, up to a 38-core GPU, and it supports up to 96GB of unified memory with 400GB/s of memory bandwidth.

According to Apple, the Mac Studio with M2 Max is up to 50% faster than the previous generation Mac Studio with an M1 Max chip. However, there’s also a new M2 Ultra chip to succeed to the M1 Ultra chip in the high-end Mac Studio model.

Apple’s M2 Ultra chip connects two M2 Max chips together with Apple’s Ultra Fusion technology. Overall, this chip includes a 24-core CPU, up to a 76-core GPU, and up to 192GB of memory with 800GB/s of unified memory bandwidth.

“Mac Studio with M2 Ultra is up to 3x faster than the previous-generation Mac Studio with M1 Ultra,2 and up to 6x faster than the most powerful Intel-based 27-inch iMac,” Apple said today. The company claims this is the most powerful chip ever created for a computer, and it can handle up to six Pro Display XDRs at once.

The new Mac Studio models also offers a newer HDMI 2.1 port, six Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 10Gb Ethernet port, plus Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support. The 2023 Mac Studio models start at $1999, and you can pre-order them today ahead of their general availability next week.

M2 Ultra Mac Pro

It’s been a long time coming, but the Mac Pro is the last Mac Model to be upgraded with Apple Silicon. The new Mac Pro now comes with the same M2 Ultra chip as the one found in the top-of-the-line Mac Studio, but it can be upgraded with other components thanks to 6 PCIe Gen 4 expansion slots.

“From audio pros who need digital signal processing (DSP) cards, to video pros who need serial digital interface (SDI) I/O cards for connecting to professional cameras and monitors, to users who need additional networking and storage, Mac Pro lets professionals customize and expand their systems, pushing the limits of their most demanding workflows,” Apple said today.

On the ports front, the Mac Pro now offers 8 Thunderbolt ports (six on the back, two on the top), 3 USB-A ports, two HDMI 2.1 ports, two 10 GB Ethernet ports, and a headphone jack. Just like on the high-end Mac Studio, users can connect up to six Pro Display XDRs at once.

The new Apple Silicon Mac Pro starts at $6999, and it’s available to pre-order in both tower and rack-mounted enclosures. It will also start shipping next week alongside the new 15-inch MacBook Air and the M2-based Mac Studio.
