Twitter Employees Now Have to Work From Office 40 Hours Per Week

Posted November 10, 2022 | Cloud | Elon Musk | Social | Twitter | Windows

In his first email to Twitter employees yesterday, Elon Musk announced that the company was ending its work-from-home policy, Bloomberg reported. The new expectation for employees is to work from Twitter’s offices at least 40 hours per week unless Musk personally approves exceptions.

In the email, Musk warned Twitter employees about “difficult times ahead” as the new management is still figuring out ways to increase the company’s revenue. After Musk laid off half of Twitter’s workforce last week, the Twitter CEO also put an end to the monthly day off for all Twitter staff that was previously introduced during the pandemic.

“The road ahead is arduous and will require intense work to succeed,” Musk also said in the email. The exec added that he would like subscriptions to reach 50% of Twitter’s revenue, but there’s a long way to go before that can actually happen.

So far, the rollout of the new 8/month Twitter Blue subscription has been quite a disaster. Several users have already managed to trick the system to impersonate people or brands. Twitter has also been experimenting with adding a separate “Official” label on some accounts to distinguish them from accounts with a Twitter Blue checkmark, but these plans have now changed.

“There are no sacred cows in product at Twitter anymore. Elon is willing to try lots of things — many will fail, some will succeed. The goal is to find the right mix of successful changes to ensure the long-term health and growth of the business, tweeted Esther Crawford, Director of Product at Twitter yesterday.

So far, it seems that Elon Musk wants to run Twitter as if it still was a small startup with no urgent need to make money. Unfortunately, such chaotic management for a company at the scale of Twitter could alienate power users and advertisers pretty quickly. Musk previously admitted that the company saw a “massive” drop in revenue, but he blamed “activist group pressuring advertisers” for it.
