Sony’s PS5 Controller Now Supports Firmware Updates on Windows PCs

Posted April 20, 2022 | Games | Gaming | Playstation | PlayStation 5 | Windows | Windows 10 | Windows 11

It’s now possible to update the firmware of Sony’s PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers on Windows 10 and Windows 11, no PS5 console required. Sony announced today the release of a new Firmware updater app on Windows which supports updates via a wired USB connection.

Sony releases DualSense firmware updates quite frequently to improve the controller’s performance, similar to what Microsoft does with its various Xbox Wireless controllers. If the Redmond giant already had an Xbox Accessories app on Windows 10 and Windows 11 to update the firmware of Xbox Wireless controllers, Sony had yet to offer a similar tool for its DualSense controller.

Sony’s new Firmware updater app is available to download on this page. After installing it on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, users just need to use a USB cable to connect their DualSense controller and then follow the on-screen instructions to install any firmware updates.

If there are no official PC drivers for Sony’s DualSense controller, a platform like Steam recognizes it and makes it usable with all games on the platform. However, very few PC games support the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers natively: The rare exceptions currently include Deathloop, Metro Exodus, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and F1 2021.
