Seagate Drops the Price of its Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards

Posted May 5, 2023 | Games | Gaming | Windows | Xbox | Xbox Series S | Xbox Series X

Seagate is dropping the price of its storage expansion cards for Xbox Series X|S console. The original 1TB card launched with a $219.99 price in the US, and Seagate added 512GB ($139.99) and 2TB ($399.99) options back in 2021.

This was obviously very expensive, with the 1TB card costing nearly as much as the $299 Xbox Series S. And it doesn’t help that Seagate remains the exclusive manufacturer of these storage expansion cards for Xbox Series X|S consoles, which use a proprietary connector providing a seamless plug and play experience for consumers.

Xbox Series X|S consoles do support the installation of games on USB 3.0-based external drives. However, all next-gen games need to be running from either the internal SSD or a Seagate storage expansion card, which provides the exact performance of the consoles’ internal SSDs.

The Xbox Series X comes with over 800GB of usable storage, so getting a Seagate storage expansion card shouldn’t really be necessary for most people owning the high-end console. However, the cheaper Xbox Series S comes with just over 360GB of usable internal storage, which isn’t really convenient considering that some games now take over 100GB of storage.

Well, if you’ve been waiting to purchase one of Seagate’s Storage Expansion Cards for your Series X or Series S console, all models have now received significant price drops, as seen below:

  • 512GB card: $89.99
  • 1TB card: $149.99
  • 2TB card: $279.99

The new prices are now live on Amazon and other retailers should follow soon. However, it appears that Microsoft is no longer selling these Seagate storage expansion cards on the Microsoft Store. This is still quite expensive compared to standard NVMe SSDs, though Seagate may soon face some competition from Western Digital.

Last month,  a store listing for a $179.99 Western Digital 1TB Xbox Series X|S expansion card briefly appeared on Best Buy. Back in 2020, Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management for “Xbox said that “Xbox is continuing to invest in the Expandable Storage category on Xbox Series X|S with goal of offering choice for Xbox fans, including additional capacities and implementations in the future.”
