Android P is almost ready for public release. Google has been testing the next update to Android with some of its OEM partners, as well as its own Pixel devices. The Android P beta has been available on some of OnePlus’ flagships, and the firm is now announcing that it will be bringing Android P to the OnePlus 3 and 3T, a device that was released back in 2013.

The company announced its commitment to three years of updates for the OnePlus 3/3T, 5/5T, 6, as well as future devices. And the release of Android P for OnePlus 3/3T is likely part of that effort. To focus on the Android P release, OnePlus will not be bringing Android Oreo 8.1 to the OnePlus 3/3T. Instead, it will only release Android P.

“We’ve been listening to questions asking about our next major update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. After internal discussions and evaluation, we have decided to focus our development resources on the Android P project instead of upgrading the device to Android 8.1, so that we can offer more exciting features and improvements for our OnePlus 3 and 3T users,” the firm said in a forum post.

OnePlus is yet to announce when exactly the Android P update will be available for the OnePlus 3/3T, or any of its recent flagships, other than the fact that it will be available “in the coming months.” Still, considering the fact that OnePlus has been quite inconsistent when it comes to updates for older phones, this is definitely a welcome change.
