New iMac models spotted in macOS 11.3 beta

Posted March 25, 2021 | Mac

The launch of new iMac models equipped with Apple Silicon processors looks to be getting closer. Yesterday, Apple uploaded a new beta version of macOS Big Sur 11.3 to developers, and 9to5Mac has rummaged around in it and found references to the new models.

“iMac21,1” and “iMac21,2” are the model designations.

(The current 27in model has the designation “iMac20.1”, or “iMac20.2” if you choose a Radeon RX 5700 XT. The 21in model was not updated last year and has the designation “iMac19.2”; “iMac19.1” is the 2019 27in model.)

The existence of two new designations may indicate that Apple plans to release the new iMac in two sizes from the start, something that Bloomberg has previously also claimed.

This isn’t the only reason to expect Apple to announce new iMacs at its highly anticipated April event. It’s also been noted that two configurations have been quietly discontinued, an indication that Apple is winding up production on its current iMac range.
