Netflix reported its Q1 2020 earnings last evening, and it’s just as impressive as you would expect. With more people now at home, it was no surprise Netflix was going to see a huge increase in subscriber numbers.

In fact, the company reported its streaming service gained a total of 15.77 million new subscribers in Q1, bringing its total number of paid subscribers to 182.86 million. The company added more than double the number of new subscribers it had expected to in Q1.

Of the 15.77 million, 2.3 million subscribers were from the United States and Canada, while the other 13.5 million subscribers came from around the world. Netflix says the company is seeing this as a temporary rise in its subscriber base. “Our membership growth has temporarily accelerated due to home confinement,” the company said in a letter to shareholders. “We expect viewing to decline and membership growth to decelerate as home confinement ends, which we hope is soon.”

Netflix hopes to add only 7.5 million paid subscribers in Q2 due to this. Netflix had originally expected to add 7.2 million subscribers in Q1. The company reported total revenue of $5.77 million, slightly beating Wall Street expectations of $5.76 million.

As expected, Netflix’s original programming continues to be a hit. Tiger King was watched by a total of 64 million households, with Ozark Season 3 bringing in 29 million viewers, and Love is Blind bringing in 30 million.
