Microsoft Starts Rolling Out Bing Image Creator in its Bing Chatbot and Edge

Posted March 21, 2023 | Bing | Cloud | Microsoft | Microsoft Consumer Services | Microsoft Edge | OpenAI | Windows

Microsoft announced today that it has started rolling out a new Bing Image Creator feature in its new Bing chatbot as well as its Edge browser. Bing Image Creator leverages OpenAI’s popular DALL∙E image creation model, and it will let users create images from a simple description.

“For those in the Bing preview, Bing Image Creator will be fully integrated into the Bing chat experience, rolling out initially in Creative mode. By typing in a description of an image, providing additional context like location or activity, and choosing an art style, Image Creator will generate an image from your own imagination,” explained Yusuf Mehdi, CVP & Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Microsoft.

Microsoft will roll out its new Bing Image Creator via a phased approach, and the company intends to make the feature available in the Bing chatbot’s Balanced and Precise mode over time. Microsoft also worked with OpenAI to implement safeguards to prevent the Bing Image Creator from creating potentially harmful images.

In addition to being integrated within the new Bing chatbot (in Creative mode), Bing Image Creator will also be accessible from the Edge sidebar that appears when you click on the Bing button. Clicking on the dedicated icon in the sidebar and clicking will open the Bing Image Creator and let users get creative or explore design ideas.

For people who don’t use Microsoft Edge or didn’t register for the Bing preview, Microsoft is also making its Bing Image Creator available at bing.com/create. It’s currently only available for Bing users in English, though Microsoft plans to add support for more languages over time.

All images created with the Bing Image Creator will also feature a Bing icon, which will help to make it clear that these images have been created by AI. “We continue to believe the best way to bring these technologies to market is to test them carefully, in the open, where everyone can provide feedback,” Mehdi explained.

Lastly, Microsoft has started rolling out new AI-powered visual stories and knowledge cards 2.0 in Bing search results. Stories will appear at the top of search results and include a selection of images and short videos about the topic you’ve been searching.

On the right side of search results, the updated knowledge cards will now include fun facts, graphs, timelines, and more dynamic content to provide more information at a glance. “With these updates and more coming, our goal is to deliver more immersive experiences in Bing and Edge that make finding answers and exploring the web more interesting, useful and fun,” Mehdi said today.
