Meta announced today that it’s rolling out new parental controls across Messenger and Instagram. The latest additions include supervision tools on Messenger, as well as new messaging privacy features and nudges to take a break on Instagram.

Starting today, Parental Supervision on Messenger is rolling out in the US, the UK, and Canada. These tools will allow parents to check how much time their teen spends on Messenger, see updates on their contacts lists, and view who can message them or see their stories. However, parents still won’t be able to see their teen’s messages.

“Over the next year, we’ll add more features to Parental Supervision on Messenger so parents can help their teens better manage their time and interactions, while still balancing their privacy as these tools function in both unencrypted and end-to-end encrypted chats,” Meta said in the announcement.

Meta is also adding new tools to Parental Supervision on Instagram. Parents can now see how many friends their teen has in common with the accounts they follow and are followed by. When blocking someone on Instagram, teens will also see a notification encouraging them to add a parent to help supervise their account.

To help teens manage the time they spend on Meta’s apps, Facebook will now display a notification when they have spent 20 minutes in the app. Meta is planning to introduce a similar nudge for teens scrolling Instagram Reels at night.

Lastly, Meta is introducing new messaging privacy features on Instagram. Users now need to first send an invite to connect before being able to message someone who doesn’t follow them. These message request invitations are currently text-only to protect users from receiving unwanted photos or videos.
