Intel Reveals 10th Gen Ice Lake Processors
Intel is finally taking the wraps off its latest generation of processors at Computex this week. The company is introducing the world to its new 10th gen, 10nm, Ice Lake CPUs. These new processors are coming to laptops and 2-in-1 devices first, with more form factors expected to arrive later.
Intel is introducing a whole lot of new things with the new processors. The company says the new 10nm chips are built on a new Sunny Cove core architecture, ranging from Core i9 to Core i7. These processors will come up to 4 cores and 8 threads,m with up to 4.1 max turbo frequency and up to 1.1GHz graphics frequency. The company says these new chips are 18% faster in terms of processing instructions per cycle than its Skylake chips, which were launched almost about four years ago. There have also been bumps in single-thread performance over Intel’s 8th gen Whiskey Lake processors, but the gain seems very marginal.
In terms of graphics, Intel is introducing its 11th gen graphics architectured called Iris Plus graphics with the new CPUs. The new GPUs apparently double the performance, with 2x gain in HEVC encoding performance, and up to 2x faster FPS gains, at least according to Intel. The 10th Gen processors with Intel Iris Plus graphics also include support for 10 bit/RGB channel for HDR content.
Intel is also introducing integrated support for Thunderbolt 3 and Intel Wi-Fi 6 Gig+ for the first time which enables 3x faster wireless speeds. The company says Wi-Fi 6 will allow for wireless speeds of more than 1Gbps.
At Computex, Intel has also announced new 9th gen Intel Core i9-9900KS, with 5 GHz all-core turbo, and Intel Performance Maximizer for gamers. The company is also introducing 14 new 9th Gen Intel Core vPro processors for customers that need more power and security.
As for the 10th gen Ice Lake CPUs, they have already started shipping. But we won’t be seeing many laptops with the CPUs until later this holiday.
