Incompatible Macs getting download Monterey alerts

Posted February 15, 2022 | Mac

masOS Monterey brings many new functions, but is more performance-hungry than previous versions. That’s why Apple excludes some older Macs from the update – after all, the user experience should run smoothly.

However something appears to have gone wrong because according to Tweets and posts on various forums, due to an error causes owners of incompatible Macs are being regularly prompted to update to macOS Monterey.

Twitter user Paul Joy writes:

Joy posts a screenshot of the update notification, which promotes the software update and its new features. He is unable to install the update.

Complaints on the same topic have also been seen on Reddit. User 0570 writes:

“I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina from late 2014 (running Big Sur 11.6.2) that, according to Apple, is not supported by any newer version after Big Sur. Since this morning, I have received notifications of upgrading to Montereey, although it is not available as an update for my computer.”

It appears that there are errors in Apple’s distribution of update notifications. The problem is annoying, but has no real negative impact since the users are unable to download or install the update. It should be easy for Apple to solve. Until then, all that remains for those affected is to click away the notification and wait until Apple fixes the bug.
