Halo Infinite’s Campaign Co-op Won’t Be Ready for the Launch of Season 2

Posted March 7, 2022 | Games | Halo | Halo Infinite | Windows | Xbox | Xbox One | Xbox Series S | Xbox Series X

The much-anticipated Co-op mode for Halo Infinite’s Campaign won’t be ready for the game’s Season 2, which will kick off on May 3rd. Developer 343 Industries recently explained that addressing the game’s critical issues was the team number one’s priority, which means that the Co-op campaign is now expected to ship “later” during Season 2.

“It’s going to take more time to land a high-quality, full-featured 4-player network co-op experience in the massive, wide-open world of Halo Infinite. We’re also committed to a great 2-player split-screen co-op experience on all Xbox consoles, from the original Xbox One through Xbox Series X—and the non-linear, wide-open sections of the Campaign present some big challenges for split-screen that have taken us more time to solve,” explained Joseph Staten, Head of Creative on Halo Infinite.

Halo Infinite was the first game in the series to introduce a semi-open world in the game’s campaign, and there’s no doubt that implementing co-op isn’t as seamless as it used to be in the previous games, which were far more linear. “we are still aiming to deliver Campaign network co-op later in Season 2, and we will share a release date for that and for split-screen co-op as soon as we can,” Staten said.

If Campaign co-op has been slightly delayed, Halo Infinite’s Forge Mode is still on track for the game’s Season 3. “We are already flighting Forge to a small group of community creators and working closely with them to ensure that all of you have a terrific experience creating, sharing, browsing, and playing Forge content,” Staten explained.

Halo Infinite is in a somewhat bizarre place right now: The game had a very successful release with over 20 million players across Xbox and PC, though the absence of Campaign co-op and Forge at launch prevented the game to reach more momentum. Even though we’re now halfway through the game’s first multiplayer season, Halo Infinite could also really use more maps and add an option to disable cross-play, something that Xbox players have been asking since launch.

Staten acknowledged that “these last few months have been slower than we expected,” but that’s for a good reason: Providing a healthy work environment for the teams so that they can keep delivering great new content for Halo Infinite in the coming months.
