Google Issues Android 14 Developer Preview 2

Posted March 8, 2023 | Android | Android 14 | Dev | Windows

Exactly one month after it issued Android 14 Developer Preview 1, Google is back with Google Issues Android 14 Developer Preview 2.

“Today, we’re releasing the second Developer Preview of Android 14, building on the work of the first developer preview of Android 14 from last month with additional enhancements to privacy, security, performance, developer productivity, and user customization while continuing to refine the large-screen device experience on tablets, foldables, and more,” Google vice president Dave Burke writes in the announcement post.

Among the changes and improvements in this release are:

Improved support for tablets and foldable form factors. Android 14 builds on the work done in Android 12L and 13 to support tablets and foldable form factors, and Google now offers app quality guidance for large screens with detailed checklists, new libraries for low latency stylus and motion prediction, and a large screen gallery.

Privacy and security improvements. Android 14 will use a permissionless experience for selecting items in the Photo Picker through a combination of core platform features, Google Play system updates, and Google Play services. A new dialog will let users choose between Allow access to all photos, Select photos, and Don’t allow. Android 14 adds Credential Manager as a platform API, offers safer implicit intents, and places higher restrictions when apps start activities when the app is running in the background.

Improved background services. To help optimize app interoperability, system health, battery life, and the end-user experience, Android 14 improves memory management to lower resource usage while applications are running in the background.

There’s a lot more, but check out the original post for the full list.

Users interested in testing Android 14 Developer Preview 2 will need a Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 5, or Pixel 4a (5G) handset, or you can use a system image with the Android Emulator in Android Studio. You can learn more on the Android Developer website.
