Google Fi is Rebranded as Google Fi Wireless

Posted April 19, 2023 | Android | Cloud | Google Fi | iOS | Mobile | Windows

Google has rebranded its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) wireless service for a second time, to Google Fi Wireless, and is making it easier to manage multiple lines for a family.

“Google Fi Wireless is making it easier to stay connected with family-friendly pricing, seamless coverage and included safety features,” Google’s Karthik Lakshminarayanan writes. “We’re introducing even more value included in your plan, with smartwatch connectivity at no extra cost, a risk-free way to try it out before switching, and a refreshed family-centric app to help you get the most out of your plan.”

As you may recall, Google Fi Wireless launched as Project Fi in 2015, but it was renamed to Google Fi in November 2018 when it added support for the iPhone. With this rebranding, there are again some new features, but the service is uniquely inexpensive for families, with the Simply Unlimited plan providing unlimited data in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, plus 5 GB of hotspot per month for just $80 for 2, 3, or 4 people.

Here’s what’s new.

Free phone after 24 monthly bill credits. All Fi customers, regardless of plan, can get a free phone after 24 monthly bill credits with every new line added to the plan. Available phones include the Google Pixel 6a, Samsung A14, and Moto G Power.

Free smartwatch connectivity. Previously, Fi customers would have to pay extra for the Unlimited Plus plan ($110 per month for 2, 3, or 4 people) to get full connectivity for compatible smartwatches. But now, this capability is available to those in the Simply Unlimited Plan. It supports the Google Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch5 watches.

Try Fi before you buy. Google is now offering a 7-day free trial with unlimited high-speed data so potential customers can try the service risk-free. You’ll need an eSIM-compatible phone and will have to download the Google Fi app. You can learn more here.

New interface for families. In tandem with the rebrand, the Fi app is being redesigned with a new family-centric design so parents can more easily manage their family’s digital safety settings
