Google Docs Now Lets You Compare Documents

Posted June 12, 2019 | Google | Google Docs | Windows

Google is adding a really handy feature to Google Docs this week. The company announced a new Compare Documents feature for G Suite users that essentially allows users to compare two documents.

The way the feature works is kind of interesting. It makes use of Google Docs’ existing “Suggested Edits” feature to show you the difference between two documents. When you start using the feature, it will ask you to choose a document to compare the current document with, and after that, it will create a completely new document and show you the comparison via suggested edits. You can then choose between the different changes on both the documents.

The feature is slightly confusing in the way that it works, though it still should be really useful for various users. Being able to compare changes on a document over time is incredibly useful at times, but I feel like there could be a better way to implement the feature. It’d make much better sense if Google simply kept track of all the changes, and let you go back in time to see how the document differed from the latest version/revision.

Either way, the new Compare Documents feature is available to all G Suite edition users, but it’s only available on the web. That means you won’t be able to use it on Android, or iOS.
