Brave Brings a Firewall and VPN to iPhone and iPad

Posted July 27, 2020 | Brave | iOS | iPadOS | Web browsers | Windows

Brave announced today that it is partnering with Guardian to bring a firewall and VPN to the iPhone and iPad versions of its web browser.

“Brave is on a mission to upgrade the Internet from surveillance-by-default to privacy-by-default,” Brave CEO and co-founder Brendan Eich said in the announcement post. “With over 15 million monthly active users, our growth indicates that people are tired of being tracked, tagged, and monitored every second of every day. Brave Firewall + VPN, powered by Guardian is a big part of our mission to improve Web browsing and give power back to users over the use of their own data. We evaluated over a dozen VPNs and chose Guardian because of the shared focus on user privacy of our two companies and the technical capabilities of Guardian. The Firewall + VPN is a crucial part of the Web experience that our users have wanted, and we’re thrilled to bring this capability to Brave.”

The Brave Firewall + VPN provides network traffic encryption and filtering to improve on the privacy features that are already built-in to the browser. It provides device-wide data and location tracker blocking, plus ad blocking, the firms says.

The functionality is built-in to the iPhone and iPad versions of the Brave browser, but you must purchase a subscription to use this premium functionality. The cost is $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, and it can be used on up to 5 devices per use. It is coming other platforms later this year, Brave says.
