Apple Says iPhone 11 Includes New, More Advanced Battery System to Help Against Battery Ageing

Apple’s iPhone 11 is being shipped today. The company’s new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max come with a wide range of upgrades, with the Pro and Pro Max having significantly higher battery life. Apple even said the iPhone 11 Pro offers 4 more hours of battery life than the iPhone XS, and the Pro Max offers 5 hours more than the iPhone XS Max.

But of course, like the previous iPhones and all phones with lithium-ion batteries, the performance of the new phones will degrade over time. Apple’s previously gotten into a bit of a controversy in the past where the company was found throttling the performance on older phones to help against the degrading performance as batteries age. The company later introduced new software features, and new hardware features with the iPhone 8/8+ and iPhone X to help against battery ageing.

And now, on the iPhone 11 line, Apple is introducing a new performance management system. According to the company (via 9to5Mac), the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max feature a new hardware and software system that will help dynamically reduce performance impacts as your battery ages. The new system is apparently automatic and always-on. The system dynamically monitors the power needs on the iPhone 11 devices and manages the performance in real-time to help reduce the performance impacts from battery ageing in the longer run.

Apple says this new system is “more advanced” than previous iPhone battery and power management systems. The company still warns against the obvious impacts of battery ageing on performance in the longer run, though. “While performance impacts are reduced as much as possible, battery aging might still eventually lead to noticeable, possibly temporary, effects,” the company said.
