Apple extends service program for faulty MacBook Pro

Posted January 19, 2021 | Mac

If you have problems with the backlight in the 2016 MacBook Pro, you now have a little longer to get it fixed free of charge.

Back in 2019 Apple introduced a service program for faulty MacBook Pro models that were sold between October 2016 and February 2018, read more about that in our round up of MacBook Problems, Product Recalls and Repair Programs.

The affected computers either have a backlight that has stopped working completely or vertical bright areas can be seen along the entire lower edge of the screen.

The problem was caused by a flex cable that is slightly too short. From 2018, a longer flex cable was used, so newer MacBook Pro models should not be affected.

Apple has now extend the service program, so that it is valid for five years from the original purchase date or three years from the service program’s start date (May 21, 2019), whichever is longer.

If your MacBook Pro is eligible you can apply for it to be serviced by Apple or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The company will fix the display issue free of charge should it be detected.

More information is available on the Apple website.
